Overview of LEGION 3D

LEGION 3D displays and records rich three-dimensional visualisations of LEGION models incorporating 3D CAD, Spatial Objects and a wide range of realistic Entity characters. It can provide very intuitive and persuasive visual outputs for presentations and design projects.

To achieve this, LEGION 3D combines several types of file in a project:

  • LEGION data file–(‘ora’ file or ‘res’ file).
  • ‘3ds’ file–a fully-rendered 3D scene modelled using third-party software and based on the original CAD plans used in LEGION Model Builder to generate the data files.
  • SketchUp ('skp') files –3D scenes from the popular modelling software.
  • Optional ‘Aimsun results file’ (XML) for including road vehicles and their movements in a visualisation.
Note: SketchUp files do not currently support animation.

When you have loaded these files into LEGION 3D, you can save your work as a LEGION 3D project file (‘l3d’) which will contain your scene, data and any additional elements like Environment settings, Timeline settings and Cameras.

You can change the level of 3D detail in order to polish presentations or enhance performance. The 3D environment can be viewed from every conceivable angle using built-in views; zooming, panning and tilting tools, and Cameras. You can even track a single Entity with a Camera which records a journey from the Entity’s viewpoint.

When setting up a video recording of your 3D visualisation you can use the Timeline’s ‘Set active Camera’ feature to place and move between selected Cameras (see Setting an Active Camera).

Note: For detailed information on how to build scenes in third-party applications, please refer to the applications’ own user documentation.
